5H12 Tool Steel | 5Cr5MoWVSi | High-Carbon Hot Work Tool Steel Supplier

5H12 tool steel(5Cr5MoWVSi) is a premium high-carbon hot work die steel distinguished by its chromium-molybdenum-tungsten-vanadium alloy system . With approximately 0.50-0.55% carbon—significantly higher than conventional H11 or H13—it delivers superior hardness and edge retention after heat treatment . The tungsten addition (1.00-1.50%) further enhances hot strength and wear resistance for demanding applications.

What makes 5H12 steel unique is its dual-purpose nature: it functions effectively as both a hot work die steel for forging and die casting, and as a blade steel for industrial knives requiring exceptional sharpness and edge retention . Comparable to AISI H12 and DIN 1.2606, though with higher carbon content for improved wear performance . Ideal for hot forging dies, die casting molds, and industrial knife blades. Available annealed for machinability or pre-hardened for immediate use.

The defining feature of 5H12 tool steel is its higher carbon content (0.45-0.55%), which provides superior hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment . Tungsten (1.00-1.50%) enhances hot strength, while chromium ensures deep hardenability. Vanadium (0.40-0.60%) refines grain structure and improves wear resistance

Heat Treatment & Processing of 5H12 Tool Steel

Heat Treatment:

  • Soft Annealing: Temperature 800-840°C (1470-1540°F), hold 4-6 hours, furnace cool. Resulting hardness ≤250 HB, optimized for machinability

  • Stress Relieving: Temperature 600-650°C (1110-1200°F), hold 1-2 hours, air cool. Reduces distortion during hardening

  • Preheating: Recommended to minimize thermal shock during austenitizing

  • Hardening (Austenitizing): Temperature 1000-1050°C (1830-1920°F). Quenching medium: Oil, air, or warm bath (approximately 540°C). Hardness after quenching: 57-60 HRC

  • Tempering: Double tempering strongly recommended. Temper immediately after quenching while tool is still warm.

Processing Guide:

Forging: Hot forming temperature 900-1100°C (1650-2010°F). Slow cool after forging to prevent cracking

FAQ of 5H12 Tool Steel

Q1: What is 5H12 tool steel?

A: 5H12 is a general‑purpose hot‑work tool steel with 5 wt% Cr. Its corresponding Chinese GB grade is 5Cr5MoWVSi. It is a high‑purity premium alloy hot‑work steel, well‑known for outstanding impact toughness and thermal‑fatigue resistance.

A: 5H12 steel equivalent China GB 5Cr5MoWVSi, US AISI H12, German DIN 1.2605 / X35CrWMoV5, Japanese JIS SKD62.

A: Typical composition of 5H12 material: C: 0.45‑0.55%, Si: 0.80‑1.20%, Mn: 0.20‑1.50%, P: ≤0.030%, S: ≤0.030%, Cr: 4.75‑5.50%, Mo: 1.00‑1.75%, V: 0.40‑0.60%, W: 1.00‑1.50%.

A: 5H12 delivers high hot strength and hardness. It shows good toughness, thermal‑fatigue resistance and wear resistance at medium‑temperature conditions. It has small heat‑treatment distortion and low scale‑forming tendency during air quenching, plus excellent resistance to molten‑aluminum erosion. Its V content is lower than H13, so it provides better impact toughness.

A: Annealed (delivery condition) hardness ≤250 HB; some references state ≤229 HB. After quenching at 1020‑1050°C and tempering at 560‑600°C, service hardness ranges 47‑49 HRC. Certain tempering processes can reach 58‑60 HRC.

A: 5H12 is mainly used for hot extrusion dies, hammer forging dies, press forging dies, precision forging die inserts, and die‑casting dies for aluminum, copper and their alloys. It is also applied to make blades, rolls and other products.
