1.2316 Steel Plate: Specifications, Selection & Inspection Guide

Steel plate is the most common form of mold steel. All plastic mold cavities and mold bases start from steel plates. Widely used in plastic molds, DIN 1.2316 steel plate requires professional knowledge for specification selection, process judgment and quality inspection. This article helps you master the basic skills of 1.2316 plate selection and acceptance.

1.2316 Steel Plate Specification Range: Thickness, Width & Length

Standard stock sizes of 1.2316 steel plate: thickness 10–810mm, width 210–810mm, length 3000–5800mm.

Thickness decides production process:

  • Plates ≤80mm adopt hot rolling, low cost and fast delivery.
  • Plates >80mm use forging process. Larger thickness needs more forging cycles:

    100–200mm (2-upset-2-draw), 200–400mm (3-upset-3-draw), over 400mm (5-upset-5-draw).

Most plastic mold cavity plates are 30–80mm hot rolled plates for the best cost performance. Large mold base plates (100–300mm) use forged plates, 20–40% more expensive. If your required width exceeds 810mm, you need joint plates or customized wide forged plates with higher cost and longer lead time.

Delivery State & Surface Treatment of 1.2316 Steel Plate

Standard delivery: pre-hardened & black surface. Factory quenched and tempered to 28–34 HRC with original oxidation layer. Suitable for heavy machining including milling, drilling and wire cutting.

Machined / milled surface plates reach Ra 3.2–6.3μm, saving rough machining work. Polished surface is available but costly and easy to produce grinding stress, usually finished by mold factories.

Annealed plates (20–25 HRC) suit complex cavity machining and custom heat treatment. Check all plates for cracks, folds and oxidation pits after delivery.

Size Planning & Material Utilization Optimization

  1. Machining allowance: keep 2–3mm thickness allowance, 5–10mm length & width allowance to avoid scrapping from uneven surface or edge defects.
  2. Nesting optimization: cut multiple parts from one large plate to save cost and reduce waste.
  3. Choose standard stock thickness (30/40/50/60mm) for better price and lead time. Avoid non-standard thickness which causes material waste and extra processing cost.

Six-Step Acceptance Checklist for 1.2316 Steel Plate

  1. Check MTC: all chemical elements meet standard range.
  2. Check hardness: 28–34 HRC for pre-hardened plates, hardness difference ≤3 HRC.
  3. Check dimension: thickness tolerance ±0.5–1.0mm, length & width tolerance within ±5mm.
  4. Check flatness: warpage ≤2mm per meter to avoid CNC clamping stress.
  5. Check surface: no cracks, folds or bad scaling.
  6. UT inspection for plates over 80mm: confirm no internal defects.

FAQ:

Q1: Can stainless steel plates replace 1.2316 steel plates?

A: No. 304/316 austenitic stainless steel is below 20 HRC and cannot be hardened, easy to deform for molds. 1.2316 is professional martensitic mold steel with totally different performance.

A: No. Qualified 1.2316 plate should be rust-proof under normal storage. Rust may result from insufficient chromium or galvanic corrosion with carbon steel. Polish and recheck chemical composition before use.

A: Plates ≤20mm can be laser cut, but need 0.2–0.5mm removal to eliminate heat-affected micro cracks. Thick plates over 20mm recommend water jet or plasma cutting.

Conclusion

High-quality molds start with qualified steel plates. Keyspark Steel provides professional size selection and acceptance guidance, with sufficient 1.2316 plate stock for fast delivery.
