1.2316 Steel test: Follow 4 Steps, Say Goodbye to Poor Quality

You’ve paid a premium for a batch of 1.2316 mold steel. The shipment has arrived. It looks fine — smooth surface, correct dimensions. But can you really be sure this is genuine 1.2316 steel?

In the following content, we will introduce each step one by one: Step 1. Hardness test; Step 2. Chemical composition verification; Step 3. Mill Test Certification(MTC); Finally, we will show you Step 4. Ultrasonic Testing(UT) from the source.

1. Hardness test

Standard Hardness Range:

  • 280 – 325 HB (or 29 – 33 HRC)

How to Evaluate:

  • If hardness is below 280 HB, the steel may not have been properly heat treated, or it may not be genuine 1.2316 at all.
  • If hardness is significantly higher than 33 HRC, or varies widely across different sections of the steel, it indicates serious flaws in the heat treatment process, high internal stress, and a high risk of cracking during machining.

Procurement Recommendations:

  • Use a portable hardness tester to take measurements at the head, middle, and tail sections of the steel respectively. This is a highly effective on-site inspection method.

2. Chemical composition verification:

Meeting the hardness standard is not enough.

With adjusted heat treatment, 4Cr13 can also achieve 290–330 HB. Hardness alone cannot distinguish between the two grades.

Testing standards:

Key chemical composition range of genuine 1.2316 steel:
  • Chromium (Cr): 15.5 – 17.5%
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 0.80 – 1.30%
  • Carbon (C): 0.33 – 0.40%

If the Mo content is 0%, or the chromium content is below 15%, this steel is not genuine 1.2316 steel.

3. Mill Test Certification(MTC)

The quenched 1.2316 steel has high internal stress and cannot be used directly. It must be tempered.

Tempering serves three purposes: stress relief, hardness adjustment, and toughness improvement. The tempering temperature also affects corrosion resistance.

What's in the MTC:

  • Steel mill name and batch number
  • Measured chemical composition (full elements: C, Cr, Mo, Mn, Si, P, S)
  • Mechanical property data (hardness, tensile strength)
  • Heat treatment condition description
  • Microstructure Uniformity
  • Non-metallic inclusions
  • Carbide morphology
  • Inspector’s signature and company seal

4. Ultrasonic Testing(UT)

  • Testing principle: Similar to performing an ultrasound scan on steel. An ultrasonic instrument is used to scan the interior of the material.
  • Acceptance standard: Suppliers must guarantee that the material meets the ultrasonic testing standard of SEP 1921 Grade D/d or higher (ESR grade can reach Grade E/e).
  • Performance: Ultrasonic-tested steel features an extremely dense internal structure, free from porosity and cracks.
