3 Steps to Optimize 1.2316 QT Premium Properties

If you buy 1.2316 steel and perform heat treatment, yet the final result is still unsatisfactory. Where exactly does the problem lie? The answer lies in the process details of 1.2316 QT (quenching and tempering). This article will show you three key steps to optimize the performance of 1.2316 material.

1. Choose the Right Quenching Temperature - Get the Right Hardness

The first step is quenching.

It heats the steel up to the austenitizing temperature and then cools it down quickly, locking carbon and alloy elements inside the martensite structure to gain high hardness.

The recommended quenching temperature range is 1000°C to 1040°C.

2. Choose The Right Tempering Temperature - Balance Hardness And Toughness

Tempering can relieve the internal stress generated by quenching. It also converts overly hard and brittle martensite into tempered martensite with moderate hardness and better toughness.

The tempering temperature range for is 150°C to 600°C; the higher the temperature, the lower the hardness and the better the toughness. You need to find this balance based on the actual working conditions of the mold.

3. Perform Double Tempering - Eliminate All Internal Stress

Single tempering can release most internal stress, but it cannot remove it completely. For din 1.2316 workpieces with a thickness over 100mm, residual stress still remains after one tempering process. This stress will gradually release during later machining or actual use, and finally cause deformation or cracking.

1.2316 steel molds treated with two complete tempering cycles have excellent dimensional stability, and the risk of cracking can be reduced by more than 90%.

4. Conclusion of 1.2316 QT

1.2316 QT is not hard to handle. The hard part is getting every step right.

We provide two options:

Option 1:

Pre-hardened Ready Stock (Most Time-Saving)

Hardness ranges from 30 to 34 HRC with high-temperature tempering already completed. You can process the material directly after delivery without additional heat treatment.

Available specifications: Round steel bar diameter 10-300mm, steel plate thickness 5-150mm, finished precision plate thickness 10-80mm.

Option 2:

Annealed Customization (Quench by Yourself)

Purchase annealed 1.2316 material, and you can complete the 1.2316 QT process following the three steps above. We can also conduct heat treatment according to your required hardness before delivery.
